About David
David Finnerty, LMSW
David is a psychotherapist who works primarily with men. Often people come to therapy because something has stopped working, or because it has not been working for a long time. Many of the ways we learn to manage pain, loss, or fear make sense at the start. Some work for years. Some never work as well as we hope. Either way, there comes a point when they cost more than they give. That is usually where the work begins.
He received his Master's Degree in Social Work from Fordham University and his BS in Business Studies and Economics, magna cum laude, from Empire State University. His clinical training was completed at the Manhattan VA's Substance Abuse Recovery Program, an intensive outpatient program serving veterans with addiction, trauma, and co-occurring mental health conditions.
Before becoming a therapist, David spent nearly two decades on the trading floors of the American and New York Stock Exchanges. His path into this work was shaped by personal experience with loss, recovery, and beginning again. He approaches each client with directness, patience, and respect.
He believes lasting change comes less from becoming someone new than from creating the conditions in which the person already there can begin to emerge. He will not ask anyone to move faster than they can.
